Positive thinking of survival is a cause of better results for heart patients:

Well, just like it’s said “your attitude affects your latitude”

According to a new study when a well hospitalized patient is diagnosed suffering from coronary artery disease and is positive about his recovery is found out to have less chances to die earlier and have better physical functioning over the passing years of age.

Earlier studies have found that the hope and the positive thought of the heart patient to gain recovery faster influences his physical functioning and his return to work. But this study shows how the patient beliefs affect the health of the patient over the long term.

Long live with positive thinking:

The Duke University Medical Centre monitored about 2,818 heart patients suffering from the coronary artery disease after providing them coronary angiography in which the blood flow is evaluated in the coronary arteries of the heart. Through this research they found out that the patient’s beliefs and thoughts are how much important for his disease recovery and its affects and how it helps to perform normal physical activities in his life.

These patients also went through a survey in which they were asked about there future lifestyle. In this survey they found many of the patients left hopes of recovery and many were with there positive outlook of recovery.

An author John Barefoot, who is a PhD, worked with his team on the features of disease severity and health history, symptoms of depression, social support, age, sex, education and the income of the patient. The death rate of the heart patients with great expectations and hopes is 31.8 deaths per 100 patients and the people with the lowest expectations have a death rate of 46.2 per 100 patients.

Over the 15-year of study illustrates that the patients with high expectations and hopes are 17% less likely to die before age. As there is a relation between the depression and the increasing death rates, Barefoot says, “These findings demonstrate the magnitude of the impact of the patient expectations on the recovery process above and beyond depression and other psychological and social factors”. So the people suffering from depression or any psychological problem can die earlier due to the lowest expectations.

Effects of Expectations:

As we have seen earlier the results due to the hopes as well as the hopeless patients, Barefoot and his colleagues give two of the possible reasons to look upon how the expectations effect the patients age. Firstly come the patients those are lively and optimistic, will attentively follow the steps of the treatment plan rather than focusing on the emotion stresses or hopelessness which will effect their health in the other way which leads to death.

Other risks of the negative thinking can affect the whole body and will create tension and stress which may also cause cardiac events and damaging of the body.

Realism:

Robert Gramling, an editorial, MD, who is affiliated with the University of Rochester, advised the doctors to check out the emotions as well as the data before advising the patient to be hopeful or distrust of recovery. The doctors say that emotional recovery is opposite to reality so he affirms the importance of the both. He says that both the emotion and the medical recovery are important.

About The Author:

Andrew Hudson is a cheif editor and has been publishing his work online since 6 years. He recently writes about how Twin Mattress Size can effect your health and how XL Twin Mattresses help you get better sleep.

Skin Lifting

Sometimes it seems as if you went from young smooth skin to skin that sags and droops. Just where did all that extra skin come from? A high-energy person who takes care of herself, your face no longer matches your persona. Finding that to be completely unacceptable, you decide it’s time to rid yourself of the sagging.

Does this scenario sound familiar? If it does, there are many options available today to address sagging skin needing lifting. Aging gracefully is a goal anyone can achieve.

Don’t Be Inhibited

Wrinkles and skin sagging are normal by-products of aging. Gravity, pollution, cell aging, stress and lifestyle determine the speed of skin aging. Collagen, elastin fibers and facial muscles contribute to the shape of our face and the strength of our skin. As muscles and elastin fibers weaken and collagen becomes less plump, the result is a face and neck in need of a lift. The alternatives for addressing the problem range from simple night creams to surgery.

Protein based creams and lotions containing Vitamin C for reducing fine lines and light wrinkles by moisturizing and plumping

Collagen injections into deep layers of skin

Botox injections of botulism toxin into facial muscles

Rejuvenating skin facials done at home or by a professional

Skin resurfacing also called chemical peels or exfoliating

Surgical face lifts

Don’t be inhibited from action by the wide range of options. Your age and the extent of the sagging should be your determining factors for choosing a face-lifting program. But if you still don’t know which is best for you, seek professional advice from an online skin consultant, a dermatologist or a surgeon.

To Peel or Not to Peel, That Is The Question…

Botox and collagen injections are very popular procedures today. But not everyone is comfortable with the idea of injecting botulism toxins into their body for whatever reason. The next best alternative is skin resurfacing. Resurfacing removes excess surface skin and allows new skin to grow. It also stimulates collagen and elastin growth. New skin will always be moister and more flexible, thus lifting occurs. There are several kinds of skin resurfacing plans.

Chemical peels where a chemical is applied to the skin and the outer skin layer is sloughed off

Laser resurfacing which goes into a deeper skin level

Contains sudiferous glands which secrete sebum

Dermabrasion which is done with a rotating brush or medical instrument

There are chemical peels that can be done at home, but the more dramatic effects can be achieved with a chemical peel performed by a dermatologist.

If you want to go all the way and choose the most radical alternative, then face-lifting surgery by a surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery is the best choice. Surgery is the most invasive form of lifting. The skin around the face and neck is cut, pulled tighter and excess skin is removed. This is the most expensive alternative and the most radical.

Completely Comfortable

There are a myriad of ways to approach face and neck lifting. The important point is to do what is comfortable for you. Some people get surgical face-lifts and regret the decision. Others are trying to do lifting at home and are not happy with the results and should seek professional alternatives. Finally, understand the potential side effects of each alternative before you choose your option.

Taking Back Your Hair

Hair care can be a topic of mass confusion with all of the conflicting information there is out there. Everyone wants luxurious, healthy looking hair but not all of us know how to get it. Which hair cleansing products should you use on your hair type? What about blow-drying your hair? Which is better a traditional curling iron or ceramic? These are just some of the questions that will be taking a look at. With so many different types of hair products on the market today it really is difficult to make a sound choice.

If your hair tangles easily, has split ends and breaks easily you are probably experiencing issues with dry hair. The first step of action to take is to see your cosmetologist and have those split ends removed with a good haircut. Once you have removed the split ends it is time to find a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. The goal is to hydrate and replace the oils missing in your hair in order to restore it to its natural, healthy state.

Oily hair tends to look and feel dirty and is also prone to dandruff. Many believe that the cause of dandruff is a dry scalp, but the fact is it’s the opposite. The truth is when your scalp is producing too much oil it supports the continued growth of yeast, which is thought to be a cause of dandruff. To get that oily hair under control before you have a dandruff problem, use an oily hair formula shampoo. If you do not find an oily hair formula you like, try adding a drop of dish liquid to your regular shampoo. Skip the conditioner, as it only adds to the problem of oily hair. If you are all ready suffering from dandruff, there are a variety of shampoos out there to choose from. If none of them give the desired result, you might need to visit a dermatologist.

Once you have the cleansing of your hair under control you need to know how to treat it. Blow-drying is very hard on your hair. It is recommended that after washing your hair you wrap it in a towel to absorb the excess water. Let your hair air dry as much as possible and then blow-dry it, being careful not to leave the blow dryer in one spot for more than a few seconds.

Curling and straight irons are the most popular forms of hair styling tools. It is important to know which type to use so that you are not doing damage to your hair. Traditionally, curling irons were made from metal. This type of curling iron tends to cause hair breakage. Ceramic irons are a much better option. They were designed to cut down on breakage and to keep hair looking smooth and healthy. Whether you decide to use a metal or ceramic iron, it is important to apply a gloss product to your hair for added protection and shine.

Skin Cancer: Risk Factors and Prevention

Everyone knows about the dangers of skin cancer. But not everyone understands that skin cancer is often payment for the sins of our youth. Cancer that appears on your skin is normally something that has been in the making for many years. It is an end result of a mixture of genes and behaviors that is peculiar to each person and the risk of getting skin cancer is directly proportional to certain risk factors that increase the odds.

Skin Cancer Risk Factors

Heredity (genes)

Frequency of unprotected exposure to sun

Smoking

Type of skin – fair skin has highest degree of risk

Sunburns we got as a child

Use of sunlamps and tanning beds

Cancer on the skin is a group of malignant mutated cells on the outer layers of the skin. A melanoma is the more severe form, because it can go below the outer layer. This makes it more probable, that if left undetected, it could spread into the body. The good news is that if caught early, any kind of skin cancer is curable. Detecting skin cancer is not difficult. It just takes diligence. The American Academy of Dermatology created the ABCDE rule to make it easy to remember what to look for on your skin.

Learn Your ABC’s – by ‘The American Academy of Dermatology’

A – look for an asymmetrical mole or a mole that is not the same on both sides
B – look for moles with an irregular border
C – look for moles that are an uneven color
D – look for moles that are larger than 6 millimeters (approx .25 inches)
E – look for moles that are elevated above the skin

If you discover any mole that looks suspicious, it is important to see a doctor right away. Like any cancer, early detection is the key to eliminating the skin cancer and preventing its spread.

Preventive Measures

Like most problems, preventing the problem in the first place is the best strategy. Though skin type and genes are major skin cancer determinants, there are things anyone can do to minimize the risk.

Avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 10 AM and 3 PM

Never use tanning beds and sun lamps

Use sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15

Wear protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses

A tan is actually damaged skin cells. It is the mutation of the cells caused by UVA and UVB rays (ultraviolet A and B) that creates cancerous moles. Ultraviolet rays are radiation, whether you get the rays from a tanning bed or the sun. Sunscreen lotions should be used regularly, but most importantly, they should be used all your life, from infancy to old age. If you get one or more severe sunburns as a child, it significantly increases the odds of getting skin cancer after 50 years old.

The sunscreens today are nothing like the greasy ointment-like lotions that used to be sold. Lotions today have important UV ray protection and moisturizers, and most are non-greasy. They are easy to apply and don’t stain clothes so all the excuses for not wearing sunscreen have been eliminated. There is a wide selection of sunscreen products for skin, lips and face. The best news is there are now effect self-tanning lotions available on the market. So if it is important that you have a tan, you can get one today without exposing yourself to dangerous skin damaging rays.

Grooming your eye brows

The expression on your face can tell volumes about the kind of person you are. Whether you’re upset or happy, the way your face moves can cause others to gravitate to you or shy away. Instead of creating the wrong impression with your expression, you can help to open up your demeanor with simple eye brow shaping. When your eye brows are properly shaped, they can brighten up your appearance – even when you’re not feeling so bright.

How to shape your brows

You will need several tools in order to properly shape your eye brows:

Small manicure scissors

Tweezers

Pencil

Eyeliner pen (and color will do, though white is preferable)

Well lit mirror

The first thing you need to do when you get started is to look at your face in the mirror. Look at your current bone structure and see what your eyebrows look like now. You might see that there are stray hairs between them, creating the unfortunate ‘unibrow’ look – that can be easily remedied at the start or after you do the primary shaping.

Take the pencil in one hand and the eye liner in another. Line the pencil up with your nose so that the pencil is alongside your nostril and going straight up to your scalp as straight as you can. Hold it there as you draw a small mark on your eye brow where the pencil meets it. Keeping the pencil in place, rotate it so one part is on your nostril still but the other move toward the outside corner of your eye at an angle. Wherever the pencil is meeting the outer part of your eye brow, make a small mark here too.

Also take the pencil and carefully line it up against your eye in the center (not completely on your eye, of course) so that you have the pencil in the middle of your eye from your cheek to your forehead and mark in the middle of the eye brow where this happens.

These marks are the lines that you will want to remember when shaping your brows. The mark that’s on the inside of your eye brow is the end of your inner shape. Anything that is in the middle of this mark (you did do both eyes, right?) will need to be removed with a tweezers. The same goes for the outside mark and removing anything outside of that mark, between the brow and your forehead.

The middle mark is a little trickier. This is where you can start to arch your brow if you want that effect. You may want to pluck a few hairs here and then slowly create a thinner and thinner eye brow as you move toward the outside of your face.

If you have troubles with tweezers, simply ice down your skin for a few seconds and then pluck – it’s a lot less painful. And remember that you can’t put back hairs that you’ve plucked, so take you time and pluck hairs one by one. If you should pluck too many, keep your shaping rules in mind and draw (lightly) in any missing hairs with an eyebrow pencil.

Dermis – Skin’s Layer

The skin is made up of 3 layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The dermis is sandwiched between the outermost and innermost layers. It contains blood and lymph vessels, hair follicles and glands. The glands control sweat and the production of sebum. Sweat is the body’s air conditioner. It is how the body vents itself to keep cool. Ever wonder how your body temperature always stays at the same level? It is through the sweating mechanism. Sebum, on the other hand, is natural oil that keeps the skin and hair moist and flexible. When you hair is oily, it is actually a buildup of sebum. People produce different amounts. The pores of the skin are the way sweat and oils reach the skin surface. There are several facial skin issues that deal with the dermis.

Skin cancer

Wrinkle therapies

Skin Hydration

Below The Surface

Skin cancer left untreated will continue to grow and probably go deeper. Once it reaches a certain point, surgery may be required to remove the cancer skin cells. The cancer removal can affect all three layers of the skin, including the dermis. There are three major skin cancer surgical treatments and several non-surgical procedures. Which treatment route is taken is determined through consultation with your doctor after evaluating the stage of cancer.

Surgical procedures where the cancer is removed by cutting

Mohs Technique where the cancer is shaved one layer at a time

Curettage and Electrodessication where the cancer is cut out and then remaining cells are destroyed through a medical procedure

Cell freezing

Chemotherapy

Laser therapy

Radiation therapy

A Wrinkle In Time

Deep wrinkles begin in the muscles underlying the dermis. There are three classes of wrinkles, ranging from fine lines to folds. Fine lines are the result of an irregular thickening of the dermis. The epidermis is fed moisture by the dermis. When the dermis is not properly formed, moisture is reduced and lines appear. Furrows are deep lines created by repetitive muscle activity. A good example is a furrowed brow. Skin folds reflect collagen loss. There has been an erosion of the elastic fibers. When elastic ceases to be supple, whatever it was holding will fall! Gravity is always waiting for an opportunity to drag our skin down.

All Wet

Keeping skin moist is critical for slowing aging. Pores must be kept clean so that glands in the dermis can do their hydrating job properly. To keep pores clean, the following routine should be religiously followed.

Never sleep in your makeup; makeup can temporarily block pores and your skin needs time to breathe

Always cleanse with the right kind of cleanser for your skin

Periodically exfoliate with hydroxides which go deep

Never use soap on your face; soap contains harsh ingredients that block pores

Give yourself a facial on a regular basis to eliminate old skin

Routine skin care is not time consuming. There are hundreds of good products on the market. But even if you cannot afford what you want, there are numerous recipes for herbal cleansers and exfoliates that you can make at home.

The dermis is the thickest layer of the skin. It plays an important part in our health. When you take care of your skin, don’t just think of the surface. Think deep!

Best acne treatment – ZenMED’s Derma Cleanse has been rated the best acne treatment time and time again. The all-natural ingredients help attack acne when it starts, inside. With ZenMED’s guarantee you’ve got nothing to lose and great skin to gain.

Birthmarks – What are they?

There is a reason why they are called birthmarks. They are colored marks on the skin of newborns. Ranging in color from pale pink to dark browns and reds, birthmarks can be small spots that are barely noticeable. But they can also be areas of discoloration that cover a large area. Most birthmarks are harmless. The personal problems that arise are most often in the areas of self-awareness. A large birthmark, especially on the face, can make a person very self-conscious. There are several different kinds of birthmarks.

Angel Kiss

Birthmarks are new blood vessels that are clumped together on the skin. A birthmark exists at birth, but can grow darker or larger over the first few months. The types of birthmarks are as follows.

Strawberry hemangioma

Cavernous hemangioma

Port Wine Stain

Strawberry birthmarks are bright red, thus the name. They are immature blood vessels. Near the surface of the skin, most of the time, the mark disappears by the age of nine as the vessels slowly mature. A strawberry mark in between a newborn’s eyebrows is often called an “angel kiss”. There is a deep hamangioma that is beneath the epidermis called the Cavernous. These types of birthmarks do not go away. There are also compound birthmarks, having the characteristics of a strawberry and a cavernous birthmark. The port wine stain is level with the outer skin. Normally, it is found on the face or neck. Port wine stains can be very large sometimes, covering a major part of the face. The dark maroon color occurs, because the stain is created by blood vessels that did not form properly during gestation.

There are other names given to birthmarks, such as salmon patches and Café Au Lait spots, but the 3 types mentioned make up the majority of birthmarks. Birthmarks can be all shapes, sizes, forms, heights and colors. In other words, anything goes. Many people are not aware that birthmarks can also appear inside – on major organs. They are more serious when that happens and may require surgery. Several approaches are taken towards the care of skin that has a birthmark.

Hide and Seek

A person with a birthmark in a prominent place often tries to camouflage the discoloration. In other situations, where the birthmark is a large raised disfiguration, they resort to surgery. There are four approaches to hiding or eliminating a birthmark.

Use of Corticosteroids

Surgery recommended by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist

Laser therapy used on marks close to the surface of the skin

Cosmetic coverage

Surgery requires eliminating the malformed blood vessels. It is used in cases where the birthmark is formed by a grouping of blood vessels usually above and below the epidermis. Laser therapy, on the other hand, can be used on port wine stains and other shallower birthmarks. Cosmetics use foundations, concealers and fixing sprays to hide the birthmark. There are specially designed cosmetics for use on the skin after laser surgery. They keep the skin cool and moist and protect the treated skin area from the sun. There is a wide range of herbal cleansers and lotions that will ease the swelling and bruising that follows birthmark treatments.

There is research being done on birthmarks every day. New products and laser therapies are being developed constantly. If you have a birthmark, keep current of the most recent treatments and cosmetics. Like any other beauty issue, your skin deserves the best.

Crow’s Feet – Taking Flight

It happens to everyone eventually – the appearance of crow’s feet wrinkles. Often, these are the very first wrinkles we see on our face. When we first notice them, we imagine our youthful appearance taking flight with large wings like a clumsy albatross. Those little lines can be heart rending because of their symbolism. But crow’s feet should be accepted as a natural part of aging. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to correct the problem though. It just means we should understand where they come from so we are able to select the right preventative measures for our face.

Birds Of A Feather

There is never one crow’s feet wrinkle. There are always several grouped around each eye. The skin area around the eye is thinner. It has no oil glands and so the skin can dry out quicker. Also, our muscles crease over consistent use. So when we squint or frown, the muscles below the skin develop crevasses. Your skin fills in where the crevasse appears. You will notice that when you squint in the mirror, the crow’s feet lines deepen. Because of the delicate nature of the skin around the eyes, its wrinkling is not necessarily correlated with your age. But one thing is certain – if you have begun to develop crow’s feet, they will get worse with age unless you slow down the process. Crow’s feet are created by more than squinting.

Exposure to the sun’s Ultraviolet rays

Free radicals cause genetic material alterations can result in collagen breakdown

Normal aging results in a loss of general skin elasticity

Smoking can activate the process of collagen degradation.

Sun exposure is often the primary cause of early aging. Ultraviolet rays cause cell damage, interfere with cell repair and breaks down collagen. The benefits of a tan should be weighed against the premature aging that will result. And don’t believe those who say that a tanning bed UV light won’t cause skin damage like the sun. The source of the UV doesn’t matter; the results will be the same.

Becoming A Swan

Aging is not for wimps! The first realization that crow’s feet have made a home around your eyes can make you temporarily feel like an ugly duckling. But there are a couple of options for changing yourself back into the swan.

Regularly use creams that contain peptides

Botox injections

Peptides are amino acids that stimulate collagen growth. Botox is a toxin that has proven effective for wrinkle treatment. The Botox is injected into the area at the corners of the eyes. The muscles relax and flatten out. By doing so, the skin smoothes also. The crow’s feet are significantly reduced in appearance. Botox effects last approximately 6 months. The technique you choose may be dictated by budget. If you choose peptide laden creams, regular use will produce results.

Restoring elasticity in the skin can produce dramatic results. Aging cannot be eliminated, but it can certainly be controlled. The days of letting wrinkles take over your face are long gone. Crow’s feet can be repaired. You can be the beautiful swan!

Are you a candidate for cosmetic surgery?

Admit it, you’ve thought about cosmetic surgery. Statistics show that more people than ever are turning to plastic surgery to tighten up their appearance or change it altogether. However, the truth of the matter is that cosmetic surgery is a medical procedure with risks and restrictions. Not everyone is the perfect candidate for a surgery. And here’s why.

You’re not done growing

Younger cosmetic surgery patients are the most likely to be declined as candidates. Anyone that still has growing to complete or who might still undergo a growth spurt can be at risk of stunting that growth if they have surgery. Girls, for example, that want breast augmentations will want to wait to see how large their breasts will grow before they decide to increase the size. Other popular procedures for the young include tummy tucks and nose jobs when these problems may also resolve with diet and exercise or just growth.

You’re not healthy

Cosmetic surgery is surgery – plain and simple. This means that you need to be in the best shape that you can be to handle the stress that you’re going to put on your body. If you’re out of shape, smoke, or just aren’t in good health, you may be more likely to develop complications or have a longer recovery period. You will want to make sure that your health is stable first before even considering the idea of plastic surgery. Who knows? Maybe getting in shape is all you need.

You’re not compliant

After a cosmetic surgery, you will receive a list of things that you can and can not do. If you are unable or unwilling to follow doctor’s orders, you might not be the right candidate for surgery. Prior to surgery, you may also be given instructions that you need to follow to the letter. Ask yourself if you have the time and the dedication to follow these kinds of instructions. If not, you might not get the results that you want.

You’re not emotionally ready

Cosmetic surgery can be difficult to handle emotionally. When you change the way that you look, you can feel guilty for changing the face or body that you have naturally or you can be upset if something doesn’t look as perfect as you want it to. You need to be able to realize that no one is perfect and that no one’s body will ever become perfect through surgery. To have much unrealistic expectations is to set yourself up for depression and possibly anxiety.

You aren’t educated on the surgery

Before going into any cosmetic surgery, you need to know what you can expect in terms of the pre-operative routine, the risks and complications, the actual procedure as well as the recovery time. Armed with this information, you can make a more realistic decision as to whether you’re the best person for this procedure.

Cosmetic surgery isn’t for everyone, but with these guidelines in mind, you can see if you’re the right candidate. And of course, you’ll have to check with your doctor.

Ceramides – The Ties That Bind

Skin is made up of three layers. They are the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the topmost layer and is the barrier to prevent environmental invasions of toxins and bacteria. The top skin layer, also called the stratum corneum, is made up of layers of ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol. These layers retain water to keep the skin moist. Ceramides form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The result is the skin’s ability to move moisture into the skin. To put it simply, ceramides make it possible for your skin to retain moisture and not dry out. Ceramides make up most of the skin layer that creates the skin’s smooth look.

Untied

As we age, ceramides don’t become untied, but they do diminish. This means that older skin becomes drier, because the water retaining ceramides are not as effective. Also, as we age, skin cells do not reproduce as well as when younger. This also affects the ability of the skin to retain water. Skin care products enhanced with synthetically reproduced ceramides help bolster the skins structure. They ‘retie’ the binds by replacing the lipids, or natural skin barrier.

Healthy skin normally has 10% to 20% water content. When it falls below 10% is when the skin looks and feels dry. The water content is directly dependent on the condition of the lipid layer in the skin. The diminishment of ceramides in the lipid layer has the most dramatic effect on the skin’s ability to act as a barrier. To rebuild the layer takes several weeks. Ceramides in beauty products can help maintain healthy skin.

Help rebuild lipid barrier

Increase skin smoothness

Stimulate skin cell growth

Restore the environmental barrier

Increase skin density

Reduction of symptoms of chemical dermatitis

Increase in skin suppleness

Increased ability to retain water

Increased speed of healing after peeling procedures

Minimize water loss

Reduction of wrinkles due to increase water retention by skin

It is important to note that diet affects skin also. The diminishing ceramides are a result of the aging process, but the use of enhanced cosmetics should be coupled with proper nutrition.

Building the Dam

You can think of ceramides as forming a dam that keeps moisture locked within the skin. Ceramides are used in a number of products.

Skin moisturizers

Hair care products

Serums

Body lotions

As we age, the skin becomes thinner and thinner. The skin barrier begins to release moisture instead of retaining water. The number of ceramides declines steadily over the years. Skin cells division slows also which means it is unable to rejuvenate as quickly as it could when younger. This is aggravated by the increased loss of moisture.

Ceramides can play an important role in rejuvenating skin. Water is a huge part of our total makeup. Maintaining the ability to retain moisture can make the difference between skin that looks young and skin that is abnormally dry. So when looking for an effective moisturizer, make sure you purchase one that includes ceramides.
