Skin Lifting

Sometimes it seems as if you went from young smooth skin to skin that sags and droops. Just where did all that extra skin come from? A high-energy person who takes care of herself, your face no longer matches your persona. Finding that to be completely unacceptable, you decide it’s time to rid yourself of the sagging.

Does this scenario sound familiar? If it does, there are many options available today to address sagging skin needing lifting. Aging gracefully is a goal anyone can achieve.

Don’t Be Inhibited

Wrinkles and skin sagging are normal by-products of aging. Gravity, pollution, cell aging, stress and lifestyle determine the speed of skin aging. Collagen, elastin fibers and facial muscles contribute to the shape of our face and the strength of our skin. As muscles and elastin fibers weaken and collagen becomes less plump, the result is a face and neck in need of a lift. The alternatives for addressing the problem range from simple night creams to surgery.

Protein based creams and lotions containing Vitamin C for reducing fine lines and light wrinkles by moisturizing and plumping

Collagen injections into deep layers of skin

Botox injections of botulism toxin into facial muscles

Rejuvenating skin facials done at home or by a professional

Skin resurfacing also called chemical peels or exfoliating

Surgical face lifts

Don’t be inhibited from action by the wide range of options. Your age and the extent of the sagging should be your determining factors for choosing a face-lifting program. But if you still don’t know which is best for you, seek professional advice from an online skin consultant, a dermatologist or a surgeon.

To Peel or Not to Peel, That Is The Question…

Botox and collagen injections are very popular procedures today. But not everyone is comfortable with the idea of injecting botulism toxins into their body for whatever reason. The next best alternative is skin resurfacing. Resurfacing removes excess surface skin and allows new skin to grow. It also stimulates collagen and elastin growth. New skin will always be moister and more flexible, thus lifting occurs. There are several kinds of skin resurfacing plans.

Chemical peels where a chemical is applied to the skin and the outer skin layer is sloughed off

Laser resurfacing which goes into a deeper skin level

Contains sudiferous glands which secrete sebum

Dermabrasion which is done with a rotating brush or medical instrument

There are chemical peels that can be done at home, but the more dramatic effects can be achieved with a chemical peel performed by a dermatologist.

If you want to go all the way and choose the most radical alternative, then face-lifting surgery by a surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery is the best choice. Surgery is the most invasive form of lifting. The skin around the face and neck is cut, pulled tighter and excess skin is removed. This is the most expensive alternative and the most radical.

Completely Comfortable

There are a myriad of ways to approach face and neck lifting. The important point is to do what is comfortable for you. Some people get surgical face-lifts and regret the decision. Others are trying to do lifting at home and are not happy with the results and should seek professional alternatives. Finally, understand the potential side effects of each alternative before you choose your option.

Guide to Botox

Wrinkles seem to appear out of nowhere. They form slowly and creep up on you like thieves in the night. Stealing your smooth skin and healthy glow, you wonder how you can put a stop to this thievery. Botox may be the wrinkle police – temporarily arresting the loss of tone and restoring plump and healthy looking skin.

It’s Criminal

It’s absolutely criminal the way you can try to take care of your skin and still find yourself unhappy with the way you are aging. Wrinkles are caused by so many factors, there is just no way you can fight them all with one cosmetic. Wrinkles are a product of the following, to name a few.

Damage caused by free radicals

Slower skin cell replacement

Environmental damage

Muscle weakening emphasized by sagging skin

Genetics

Collagen depletion

Like framing and girders in a building, collagen and elastin are the skin’s support structure. Collagen erodes over time. Like a crumbling building, the damage is slow but effective. Though the collagen supply begins to be depleted, the skin continues to renew itself. So now you have more skin than you have collagen to plump! Cosmetics claim to restore collagen, but the fact is that cosmetics cannot go deep enough yet to have a lasting impact on collagen. In addition, the chemicals in lotions cannot bond to the collagen. The discovery of Botox as an anti-aging treatment offers a way to lesson the effect of muscle and collagen weakness that causes wrinkling.

On Probation

Botox is actually a botulinum toxin. It was discovered that a small amount injected into a muscle, causes the muscle to become paralyzed. Once the muscle relaxed, the skin was able to lay smoother on the face. It is a non-surgical injection used on frown lines between the brows and on the lines around the eyes. It is also used on forehead creases. Botox paralyzes a muscle by acting as a neurotoxin on nerve endings. It is purified protein that is being tested for other uses, but right now it is primarily used for cosmetic reasons. Botox puts wrinkles on probation!

Up to three injections per muscle are administered

It takes up to 3 days for the injection to take effect

The amount of Botox injected is small enough to not cause any harm to the body

A single treatment will last approximately 3 months

Each person will react differently in terms of effectiveness

It has been used for over 10 years

It can be used indefinitely

It is approved for use by the Federal Drug Administration

Case Dismissed

There can be some side effects from the Botox injections, but they are almost always mild. Injections may cause temporary headaches or nausea. It is important to go over all aspects of the procedure with the dermatologist or physician. Botox is a safe and effective procedure for temporarily erasing age lines. Your more youthful looks are restored and time is turned back. The proof is in all the successful cases of Botox users!

Body treatments don’t have to be limited to the spa anymore. With a little imagination and a few ideas, you can create your own afternoon (or day) of bliss without having to leave a tip. From head to toe, you can create a new and fresher you – here are the ideas that you can use today.

For the face

Since your face is generally the first thing that people look at, you will want to start there. A facial is something that your local spa would offer, and you can give yourself the same kind of treatment at home. Start with a bowl of hot water and a towel. Drape the towel over your head so that the steam that rises from the bowl reaches your washed face. If it feels too hot, simply raise your head a bit to allow the steam to cool more before it gets to your skin – beauty doesn’t have to hurt. After you’ve done that for a few minutes, you will want to take out a bottle of witch hazel or some other gentle toner. Since your pores are wide open, the toner will help to clean out impurities and then shrink the pores back down. Next, you can apply a mud mask (or mix oatmeal and water for a natural mask for all skin types) and let that sit for a few minutes, rinse and then pat your face dry.

For the hands and feet

Your hands and feet are the parts of you that work the hardest, so why not treat them right? An easy way to get both looking pretty again is to start by soaking your unpolished nails in a small bowl of lemon juice. This will help to whiten up your nail tips and freshen them up. Next, you can take some sugar and add it to water to make a paste and scrub your hands and feet with the mixture, focusing on your cuticles and calluses. Rinse this off and then wash your hands and feet with soap to remove the stickiness. Add a rich lotion to your entire hands and feet put on a pair of cotton socks or mittens over your hands. Sit with the socks on for a few minutes and then remove.

For the body

Body treatments that involve a bath are hard to come by in this fast paced world. But if you have a few bags of herbal tea, you have the beginnings of a recipe for success. Chamomile works best. Simply boil water as though you are going to make a cup of tea and add six tea bags. Let them cool and run a hot bath while you’re waiting. Add four of the tea bags to the bath and let steep for a few minutes. Take the other tea bags with you as you sit in the bath. Place the remaining tea bags on your eyes to calm puffiness and block out the world.

Sure, you could use high priced body treatments and have someone else do the work, but if you already have the ingredients you need, why not get started right now?

Manicure

Try this at-home manicure

Going to the salon can be a fun afternoon, but when you don’t have the time or money to spare, there has to be an easier way. Just as with any beauty treatment, you can do your own manicure at home. However, you need to know the secrets and steps the professionals follow in order to get that salon finish that you desire.

Clean and prep

The first thing that you’ll want to do for your manicure is to clean your hands and nails thoroughly. Remove any old nail polish with remover and clean thoroughly to be sure that none of the remover in still on your nails. Gently pat your hands dry and clean the undersides of your nails with a nail clippers scraper. To prep your hands, you’ll want to soak your nails in lemon juice for about ten minutes. This releases any pigment that may still be on your nails as well as brightens the nails to look cleaner and whiter.

Cuticle therapy

The next thing that you’ll want to do is look at your cuticles. While you might think that trimming them is the best way to tame them, this can actually lead to infection, so you want to avoid trimming as much as possible. Start by putting cuticle cream on them, rubbing it in so that the cuticle is saturated. Wipe away any excess that might be on your actual nail. Take a cuticle pusher (not your nail) and gently push your cuticles into the nail bed to extend the surface of the nail. If any cuticle is hanging out after you do this, you can gently cut the extra skin away, but not too close to the skin that you break it and cause an infection.

Trimming it up

Now, during your manicure, you can trim your nails in any shape that you like, though a popular method is to cut your nails straight across and then file down the edges for a slightly graduated look. Always file your nails in one direction, rather than the sawing motion that you generally see. This will prevent your nail from becoming damaged. After you’ve trimmed your nails, you can choose to buff them with a nail buffer. Do this gently so that you’re not damaging the nail or causing it to become too brittle. When you’re done buffing, gently wipe off any dust and move to the next step.

Polishing it up

Whether you’re trying for a casual or a glamorous look, you will want to begin with a clear base coat of nail polish. You can choose a specific formulation for the base or just a regular clear polish. Using the three stroke method (one brush down the middle, and one down each side), you will paint the whole nail and let dry thoroughly. After it dries, you will then want to use the polish that you have chosen. Try to think ‘light’ as you’re applying the polish – you can always add another coat. Most manicures will require about two coats of polish and then follow with a clear polish to seal in the color.

Is microdermabrasion right for you?

If you’re looking for a way to freshen up your face without a major cosmetic procedure, microdermabrasion might be the answer you’re looking for. By gently refining the skin and creating a more even tone, you can change your overall look without completely changing your natural features. Why not help your face instead of resorting to drastic and permanent surgeries? That’s where microdermabrasion comes in.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure often done under the care of a physician or a licensed technician. What the technician does is uses small particles to gently buff away dead skin cells that may be giving you a dull and unhealthy look. These skin cells will then be replaced by tighter, fresher skin cells that are underneath, but now revealed. You can also have dermabrasion, while uses a buffing tool to perform this procedure, and that process utilizes larger and deeper skin sloughing.

What can it help?

Microdermabrasion is great for those that want to freshen up their skin and help to minimize the effects of sun damage and fine lines. However, it is not a good option for those that are looking to remove or correct deeper lines, as microdermabrasion focuses on the outermost layers of the skin’s surface. For those that simply want to soften their facial features, this is a simple and generally risk-free way to do so.

Are there any side effects?

Because the process doesn’t use harsh chemicals or ingredients, microdermabrasion is generally safe for everyone to try. If you already have open sores or wounds on your skin, it is not recommended, but for generally normal healthy skin, it’s a great option. Some patients do report that they have some redness and irritation after the procedure, but this can be handled by taking over the counter pain medications and following the post-procedure instructions as given to you.

How often can I do it?

Many patients will return for microdermabrasion every few months as they see fit. Since the skin constantly replaces itself, you will be able to maintain the results of your procedure for a certain amount of time, depending on your skin’s repairing abilities – but eventually, you will need to repeat your procedure in order to get the look that you had in the beginning.

Can you do this at home?

There are a number of microdermabrasion kits that are now available for you to use in your home. These kits are mild and can give you an instantly brighter look when you follow the instructions. Some kits will contain a cream with small particles to remove dead skin and then another cream that will sooth the newly polished skin. The results are almost equal to that you would get in a salon, so the price can make it the better option for some.
Microdermabrasion is a great way for women (and men) to create a more youthful appearance without having to have a drastic procedure. And since you can now do it in your own home, no one ever has to know.

Peeling – Attacked From Both Sides

Your skin is under constant attack. It is exposed to the air, chemicals, pollutants and toxins. On the inside, skin cells are constantly dying and being pushed to the surface. The result is skin that has poor texture, fine lines, wrinkles or poor elasticity. Facial skin resurfacing, or peeling, is an answer to the attack. Peeling removes the old skin, letting new skin breathe.

Uncovering The Truth

There are several purposes that can be achieved with facial skin peeling.

Removes areas of damaged skin

Eliminates some or all of acne scarring (depends on how deep the scarring is on the face)

Reduces appearance of fine lines or wrinkling

Corrects uneven skin pigmentation color

Removes pre-cancerous skin cells

Improves general skin appearance and tone

Lessens facial scars

Reduces sun damage

The truth is that peels are not facelifts. They are intended to remove layers of damaged facial skin, exposing the more youthful skin lying below the surface.

Plan Of Attack

There are several different kinds of skin peels.

A laser peel is where a medical laser instrument is used to remove skin layer by layer. A laser peel has relatively rapid healing, so if you are a busy person, you might consider this method of peeling. It is used for removing deep acne scars, lesions and sun damaged skin layers. It must be repeated several times.

There are three kinds of chemical peels. The chemical peel is done by coating the face with a special solution and then removing the lotion and skin it sloughs. The solution used is caustic, which can cause mild irritation or burning.

Alphahydroxy acid peel is the lightest peel. It is used to remove fine lines or smooth rough skin.

Trichlorocetic acid peel is a medium peel. It goes a little deeper and removes surface wrinkles and skin pigment problems.

Phenol peel is the severest chemical peel. It is used for deep wrinkles or sun damaged skin.

Chemical peels are also not a facelift. They improve skin appearance and remove outer skin deformities or inconsistencies.

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique often used to treat acne scars. Anyone with acne can tell you about the negative effects on self-confidence that acne scarring can produce. Dermabrasion is a common procedure and considered very safe. Dermabrasion is done by a dermatologist or surgeon and involves controlled surgical facial skin scraping.

Microdermabrasion is where a small medical sandblaster is used to spray tiny crystals onto the skin. A vacuum then sucks the crystals and dead skin off the face. It is a successful procedure for skin refreshening.

Facial Campaign

Skin resurfacing is a common dermatological procedure. It is up to each individual to decide which technique is most suitable for his or her skin repair purposes. Some people are uncomfortable with the fact that chemical peels use a caustic solution. Others decide on a laser peel, because it can be done with a facelift. It is important to understand that none of the procedures prevent aging. Peeling is a way to remove layers of the epidermis that are damaged. People with skin damage are encouraged to get regular peels because skin cells that are pre-cancerous are removed during the procedures. Whatever peeling process you choose, the end result will be the appearance of newer skin.

Pedicure – Miles To Go

Nothing can more painful than shoes that don’t fit right. On top of that, they create callouses that are unsightly and uncomfortable. High heals pinch toes, sandals expose feet to the elements and athletic shoes cannot completely protect feet from the pounding they take during exercise or sport sessions. You take care of your fingernails with a manicure. A pedicure is just a manicure for your feet.

Out Of Shape

We know our bodies can be out of shape, but did you know feet can be pinched long enough to cause deformities. Wearing shoes that are the proper size and shape for your foot is critical for the health of your feet. A pedicure is not just pampering. It is a way to make sure the skin on your feet is kept soft and healthy for proper growth.

Removes callouses that can cause deformities through excess skin buildup

Helps prevent toenail diseases

Helps prevent foot disorders by maintaining natural shape of foot

Massages stimulates healthy skin growth and circulation

Maintains healthy cuticles for nail health

Identifies common foot problems before they get serious, such as toe fungus or athlete’s foot

A Spa For The Feet

It used to be that pedicures were for rich people to have and for the rest of us to envy. That is so far from the truth today. Pedicures are affordable at a salon. But if you cannot bring yourself to buy a pedicure, you can giver your feet the spa treatment at home. A pedicure follows a certain routine that anyone can do.

Old nail polish is removed

Toenails are cut or shaped

Feet are soaked in a whirlpool type tub to soften skin and cuticles

Cuticles are trimmed

Oil is applied to toes and feet are soaked some more

Callouses and dead skin are removed

Feet are dried with towel

Nails are buffed

Lotion is massaged into feet

Toenails are polished

Doesn’t the whole process sound marvelous? A pedicure is a gift to yourself. It is pampering with a healthy purpose. A regular pedicure is advised for men and women.

Tools Of The Trade

There are certain tools you need if you are going to do your own pedicures. The basic pedicure kit includes the following.

Nail brushes

Nail files

Toenail clippers

Cuticle cream

Cuticle pusher

Nail buffers

Foot lotion

Nail polish

Exfoliating cream or lotion

There are so many options available in foot creams and lotions. Feet get very dry, and unless skin is kept pliant, can crack open. This is a common problem in the dry air of winter. Feet creams often contain soothing herbal ingredients such as eucalyptus and menthol for relief. There are also sloughing lotions that remove dead skin without harsh abrasives. If you decide to do your own pedicure, go online and find professional advice on the correct steps to follow.

A pedicure is no longer inaccessible.
