Healthy Hair

Healthy hair without the high cost

If you’ve always wanted a shiny head of hair, you’ve probably already tried every product on the shelves. From serums to conditioners, it can seem like you’re not getting the results that you need. While you might be trying to increase the shine that does not mean that you’re actually making your hair healthier in the process. Instead, why not turn to what really works and what you can do without the trip to the salon.

Starting at the tips

The hair shaft is smooth when it’s healthy and it’s also at its shiniest. What you need to do is cut down (quite literally) on the hair that is rough. This means that you will want to start establishing a routine of getting your hair cut every six weeks in order to remove the split ends that are causing your hair to appear unhealthy. You can do this on your own if you have a simple style. It is necessary that this happen in order to start reducing the overall amount of split ends that you have at regular intervals.

How are you treating your hair?

When you’re brushing and combing your hair, are you rough with it or are you gentle? This can make a huge difference in the health of your hair. Here are some key things that you will want to remember:

  • Never brush when wet.
  • To comb when wet, start at the tips and slowly detangle without pulling.
  • Do not use a towel to dry your hair, rather it should be used to gently wring out the water from your hair and pat it dry. No rubbing, please.
  • Try not to wash your hair every day. This constant washing can lead to moisture loss and reduced shine.
  • If you’re going into a chorine pool, be sure to rinse your hair immediately with cold water after exiting the pool to remove as much of the chemicals as possible.
  • Try not to over-color, over-perm and just over process your hair.
  • Heating appliances can make your hair look great, but they can also damage the hair if you’re not using heat protectants.
  • How are you washing your hair?

A lot of people think that they have to follow the directions on their shampoo bottle – wash, rinse, repeat. However, this is not necessary and is even wasteful. All you need is a quarter sized dollop of shampoo (more if you have longer or thicker hair) to gently rub into your damp hair. Rinse it completely from your hair and then apply conditioner – but only to the ends. Conditioner that’s applied to the roots of the hair can cause it to look flat. Rinse the conditioner completely and then follow with another rinse of cold water to seal the hair shaft and make it smoother.

Healthy hair doesn’t come from a special bottle – it comes from how you treat your hair each time you style it, wash it, color it, or blow dry it.
